Latino Initiative

JA of Southern California is one of four pilot sites throughout the United States chosen to implement the national JA Hispanic Initiative Model.  This far-reaching initiative is being developed in collaboration with JA Worldwide® Headquarters and modeled after an undertaking that has already been piloted by JA in Atlanta, Georgia.

JA of Southern California will launch this powerful initiative to provide a vehicle for motivating and preparing Latino youth for lifelong success. By 2009, over 600,000 new Latino students (K-12) will be positively impacted through this initiative (almost 422,000 in Southern California alone), and over 700 new Latino volunteers will be trained and serve as role models in classrooms across Southern California.  This Southern California Initiative will become a part of the overall strategic plan of JA Worldwide.

Through Leadership, Program Development and Community Engagement, the JA Latino Initiative identifies and addresses specific challenges confronting Latino youth and their families throughout Southern California.  These challenges include:

  •  Economic challenges
  • Language barriers
  •  Cultural barriers
  • Lack of Latino role models
Goals of the Latino Initiative:

  • Serve over 421,650 new Latino students throughout Southern California over the next four years
  • Track 20,000 of these new Latino students during their time in Junior Achievement
  • Recruit and train an additional 715 new Latino volunteers
  • Raise an additional $2,138,400 in the next four years; leading to the sustainability of the Latino Initiative
